Resources

Watch the two webinars The Montana Wildlife & Transportation Partnership (MWTP) presented in April 2023 about new resources and opportunities for addressing wildlife and transportation challenges in Montana.

Montana has one of the nation's highest wildlife-vehicle collisions per capita. Each year, MDT Maintenance crews collect more than 6,000 wildlife animal carcasses and 10% of all reported crashes in Montana are wildlife-related. These collisions usually result in the death of the animal, and cause property damage and sometimes personal injury or even fatalities. Busy highways can also impede wildlife movements. After years of planning, the MWTP now provides a new innovative Planning Tool and statewide Project Program to inform and implement collaborative work seeking to prevent these tragic and costly crashes and increase connectivity for Montana wildlife.

Montana Department of Transportation’s Collaborative Wildlife & Transportation Website

Montana Department of Transportation, Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks, and Montanans for Safe Wildlife Passage collaborate to develop strategies to plan and implement wildlife accommodations, reduce wildlife-vehicle collisions, and protect wildlife and their movement across state highways.

Western Transportation Institute’s Road Ecology Program

WTI’s Road Ecology Program provides national leadership in understanding the interaction between roads, natural resources, and the ecological environment. The solutions WTI develops and implements address concerns of road ecology including wildlife migration near highways and wildlife-vehicle collisions.
